Have you experienced or seen a flooding event in the San Tan Valley area?

flooding

The Pinal County Flood Control District is developing an Area Drainage Master Plan (ADMP) for the San Tan Valley area.  This study will identify flooding issues and develop useful strategies to mitigate flooding hazards within the growing San Tan Valley area. This study is the first step to generate a comprehensive flood mitigation plan for the San Tan Valley. Once completed, the study will be used to determine and prioritize future flood mitigation projects. Major tasks include:

  • Collecting data
  • Seeking community input
  • Topographic data acquisition
  • Analyzing the Queen Creek watershed east of the CAP Canal
  • Developing a hydraulic model to determine and depict existing flooding hazards
  • Devise flood mitigation alternatives
  • Recommend a flood mitigation plan
  • Watershed Description

The San Tan Valley watershed is approximately 64 square miles and includes portions of the Town of Queen Creek, the Town of Florence, and the Gila River Indian Community. The watershed is bounded by the San Tan and Goldmine Mountains to the west, the Central Arizona Project (CAP) Canal to the east, the Magma Railroad to the south, and extends just past Queen Creek Wash to the north.

The CAP Canal has a high embankment with only two drainage crossings: along Queen Creek Wash and near the Magma Railroad. The land uses vary throughout the area, consisting of mountains and foothills, large lot rural residential, agricultural fields, and higher density residential and commercial. The San Tan Valley is a rapidly developing area with new subdivisions and commercial developments constantly being designed, permitted, and built.so

How can you help?

Have you experienced or seen a flooding event in the San Tan Valley area? First-hand knowledge of previous flooding is incredibly important to understand future risk. We have set up a survey for residents to report past flooding and submit photos and videos. This will help us create a well-rounded database of known flooding locations and confirm hydraulic modeling within the project area. The survey can be accessed at: https://arcg.is/1e4biX2, or send information to the project email address at This email address is being protected from spambots.
